EXAMS

The Board administers examinations to Professional Engineer, Engineer Intern, Professional Surveyor and Surveyor Intern applicants who successfully meet the qualifications set forth in the Engineering and Surveying Practice Act.

These examinations with the exception of the New Mexico surveying examination are prepared by the:

NCEES (pronounced N·C·E·E·S) provides to all of its Member Boards five examinations:

  • Fundamentals of Engineering
  • Principles and Practice of Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Fundamentals of Surveying
  • Principles and Practice of Surveying

Each examination is six (6) hours in duration except the Principles and Practice of Engineering which is an eight (8) hour exam and the Structural Engineering which is a sixteen (16) hour exam.

New Mexico State Specific Surveying Exam

The second part of the Principles and Practice of Surveying examination is the New Mexico State Specific Surveying Exam which is a mail-out exam and covers the distinctive features of New Mexico law and practice.  The New Mexico exam is prepared under the supervision of the Professional Surveying Committee of the New Mexico Board of Licensure.

Upon Board approval of the application for exam, or endorsement, an exam packet and instructions will be provided.

The Fundamentals of Engineering and Fundamentals of Surveying Examinations

The Fundamentals examinations are a computer-based exam that is administered year-round in testing windows at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.  The Chemical Principles and Practice of Engineering Examination is being offered as a computer-based exam that is administered year-round in testing windows at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.

The Principles and Practice of Engineering Examinations

The Principles and Practice of Engineering Examinations are administered concurrently by all state Boards in April and October of each year. Professional Engineer applicants have a choice of several disciplines in which to be examined. Each fall and spring examinations are given in:

  • Agricultural and Biological Engineering
  • Architectural Engineering
  • Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
  • Software Engineering

PE exams offered in October only

  • Control Systems Engineering
  • Fire Protection Engineering
  • Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
  • Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering
  • Nuclear Engineering
  • Petroleum Engineering

A passing grade entitles an applicant to registration as a Professional Engineer or Professional Surveyor, or certification as an Engineer Intern or Surveyor Intern as provided for in the Engineering and Surveying Practice Act and the Board’s established procedures.
